The use of sodium nitroprusside as a hypotensive agent in plastic surgery.
THE use of sodium nitroprusside for hypotension during plastic surgical operations has been investigated at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, in a series of twelve cases. An attempt has been made to compare its effectiveness with that of the pharmacological blockers, and to determine whether controls such as posture and respiration are similarly responsible for its hypotensive action...

1. The effects of graded intravenous infusions of sodium nitroprusside on resting blood pressure and heart rate and on the reflex changes in these variables evoked by a standardized Valsalva manoeuvre were studied in six normal subjects. The effects of nitroprusskle on the above variables were also studied after pretreatment with captopril, to allow assessment of the role of angiotensin 11. 2. ...
متن کاملExperience with hypotensive anaesthesia in a peripheral general hospital.
Twenty patients undergoing various surgical procedures were anaesthetised using hypotensive anaesthesia using labetalol and halothane. The technique is safe, predictable and cheap. This technique also offers the advantage of usage of less blood, thus minimising the complications of transfusion induced diseases like hepatitis and AIDS.

AHLQUIST (1948) suggested that adrenergic activity is divisible into alpha and beta groups. The former is concerned mainly with contraction of smooth muscle, including vasoconstriction in some areas-noradrenaline is almost exclusively an alpha substance. The latter includes adrenergic effects on the heart and relaxation of bronchial muscles-isoprenalin restricts itself almost entirely to such a...
متن کاملMagnesium sulphate as a technique of hypotensive anaesthesia.
BACKGROUND This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was designed to assess the effect of perioperatively administered i.v. magnesium sulphate as a technique of hypotensive anaesthesia. METHODS Sixty patients (25 female) undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery were included in two parallel groups. The magnesium group received magnesium sulphate 40 mg kg(-1) i.v. as a bolu...
